Everton have been linked with a move for either Manchester United trio Chris Smalling, Marcus Rojo or Phil Jones before deadline day.

Everton will be one of the busiest teams on deadline day as Marco Silva looks to add depth and quality to his forward and defensive line before Thursday’s 5pm cut-off point.

From a defensive standpoint, there have been some interesting names being touted to make a move to Goodison Park, and in one case, three names are coming from the same club – Manchester United.

The Daily Mail have claimed that Everton are willing to sign either Chris Smalling, Marcus Rojo or Phil Jones as they bid to find that centre-back ahead of the new Premier League season.

All three players have had produced pretty horrid performances at Old Trafford in recent seasons and signing either player wouldn’t help Marco Silva in his quest to reach Europe.

On one hand, Manchester United fans will be keen to get rid of not just one, but all three of those players, and it is fair to say that the Goodison Park faithful would fume if either of them signs on the dotted line.

Everton fans support the U23's at their Premier League Cup win over Newcastle United at Goodison Park on May 08, 2019 in Liverpool, England.

Last season, the Toffees had Chelsea’s Kurt Zouma on a season-long loan, and whilst they might not be able to get him back, replacing him with either Smalling, Rojo or Jones would be a serious step-down.

Therefore, Everton need to either search the market for another player or potentially risk feeling the wrath of the Everton fans if they sign any of those players.

There’s not long left before the deadline hits, and whilst all the talk will perhaps be about who Everton bring in for their forward areas, the defensive signings might just be more important.
