Everton had been on a miserable run of four defeats in four games without scoring a goal, dampening a decent start to the season in which Rooney had netted twice in their opening two games.
Rooney sat out the 3-0 win over Sunderland, which has lifted spirits at Goodison Park ahead of the home game against Bournemouth this weekend.
Rooney praised the result and picked out young teammate Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who netted twice in the win.
