West Ham United could pip Everton to Shakhtar Donetsk boss Paulo Fonseca.

According to The Mirror and the Daily Mail, West Ham United have held talks with Shakhtar Donetsk manager Paulo Fonseca ahead of a potential deal.

The Hammers ended their season with a 3-1 win over Everton on Sunday afternoon, with Manuel Lanzini scoring twice in what may prove to be David Moyes’ final game in charge of the club.

Moyes’ contract expired on Monday, meaning the Scot is set for the exit, and West Ham are seemingly eyeing up an ambitious replacement for Slaven Bilic’s successor.

It’s now believed that Fonseca held talks with West Ham on Monday having headed to London, and the Hammers may now hope to secure a deal for the man long linked with Everton.

Fonseca, 45, had spells with Porto, Pacos de Ferreira and Braga before heading to Ukraine with Shakhtar in 2016, and he won a domestic double in his first season last term.

The Portuguese boss is closing in on another league title this season, and even took Shakhtar to the knockout stages of the Champions League with an exciting brand of football.

The Daily Mail reported that Everton’s Farhad Moshiri had identified Fonseca as the preferred successor to Sam Allardyce, but West Ham appear to have swooped in and made the first move.

Everton fans have unsurprisingly taken to Twitter to react, with some feeling that Fonseca is using West Ham to get a better offer from Everton and would prefer Marco Silva anyway, though others praised West Ham’s ambition and suggested that Everton would have no excuse for losing out to the Hammers.
