Former Everton boss Roberto Martinez is being linked with a move to Real Madrid.
Everton may be looking to settle down under Marco Silva, but one of their former managers could be on the move in the coming days, in a move that few could have predicted.
The Toffees brought in Silva as the fourth manager of the Farhad Moshiri era, following Roberto Martinez, Ronald Koeman and Sam Allardyce, and the Portuguese boss has shown promising signs this season.
His predecessor Allardyce is yet to make his return to management, whilst Koeman and Martinez are in charge of national teams; Netherlands and Belgium respectively.
However, Spaniard Martinez could be in line for a stunning return to club management, having been strongly linked with the Real Madrid job in recent days.
Real sacked manager Julen Lopetegui after a 5-1 defeat to Barcelona over the weekend, and with Antonio Conte ruled out of the running, the Daily Mail now report that Martinez is now the favourite for the job.
Martinez may have taken Belgium to the semi-finals of the World Cup this past summer, but few would have predicted that a move to Real Madrid would be on the cards – especially as the last club linked with him were Aston Villa.
Everton fans have unsurprisingly had plenty to say about Martinez potentially heading to the Bernabeu, suggesting that it would be ‘catastrophic’ for Real to appoint him whilst daring the Spanish giants to make such a bold move.
Others joked about him signing former Everton defender Antolin Alcaraz for Real, with the general reaction being one of disbelief after his three-year spell at Goodison Park, two of which were hugely disappointing.
