A key part of Iceland’s win was midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson, as the Everton playmaker – Iceland’s most recognisable player – excelled in the heart of Heimir Hallgrimsson’s side.
The 28-year-old hasn’t played since March having picked up a knee injury with Everton, but he showed no signs of rust as he produced a dominant display in midfield and showed off the creativity Everton expected when they signed him from Swansea City last summer.
Everton fans took to Twitter to hail Sigurdsson, hoping that new manager Marco Silva was watching on and plans to make him Everton’s key player next season, hailing him as a ‘class act’ and praising him for running the game.
