David Unsworth lost his first Premier League game in charge of Everton as The Toffees went down 2-0 at the King Power Stadium on Sunday.
It’s anyone’s guess how long David Unsworth will be patrolling the Premier League touchline. The academy boss has been promoted to caretaker manager while Everton look for a successor to the sacked Ronald Koeman.
With Sean Dyche, Marco Silva and Carlo Ancelotti seemingly ruling themselves out of contention in the last week, however, speculation has intensified that the 44-year-old could get the top job on a permanent basis.
In the eyes of many Everton fans, however, Unsworth made a bit of a mess of his audition against Leicester City on Sunday afternoon. A stirring counter-attacking goal from Jamie Vardy and a wild miskick by young right-back Jonjoe Kenny handed The Foxes a somewhat comfortable 2-0 win at the King Power Stadium.
Everton, however, looked more threatening than they had all season under Koeman in the first 45 minutes at Leicester. Unsworth certainly put his stamp on the team, replacing Koeman’s fleet of ‘number tens’ with two natural wingers in Aaron Lennon and Kevin Mirallas.
And the previously out-of-favour duo caused plenty of problems in the first half, Mirallas testing Kasper Schmeichel with a powerful snapchat while Lennon was unfortunate not to win a penalty from Christian Fuchs.
It was something of a surprise then, when both Lennon and Mirallas were replaced at half-time by Oumar Niasse and Beni Baningime. Though Unsworth succeeded in shoring up a midfield that had been ripped to shreds, Everton’s attacking threat pretty much disappeared.
And, with that, so did their chances of a comeback.
