Many Everton fans’ feelings towards Ross Barkley haven’t changed despite the Chelsea midfielder’s stellar display for England on Monday.

Barkley scored two goals and set up one – for his former Everton teammate, Michael Keane – as England beat Montenegro 5-1 in Euro 2020 qualifying.

But few of a Toffees persuasion can bring themselves to support the 25-year-old, who left their club in acrimonious circumstances in January 2018.

Barkley had been due to join Chelsea in August 2017, when his valuation would have been considerably higher having had twice as long left on his Everton contract.

But the deal collapsed, leaving Everton to foot their academy product’s rehabilitation bill as he recovered from a hamstring injury – and failed to play again for the Toffees.

The Liverpudlian has since appeared 44 times for Chelsea, but only 28 of those outings have arrived as a starter.
