Ronald Koeman has been sacked by Everton after Sunday’s 5-2 home defeat by Arsenal.
Well, that didn’t last long. Just two weeks after Everton’s majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri insisted that Ronald Koeman ‘has my total support’, per The Guardian, the under-fire Dutchman was relieved of his duties at Goodison Park.
Sky Sports report that Koeman has been sacked by Everton after Sunday’s humiliating 5-2 home defeat to Arsenal – something of an inevitable conclusion to a dismal start to a campaign that promised so much.
Everton spent around £140 million on new players this summer in an attempt to break into the elite of the top six but instead find themselves in the relegation zone with just eight points, and seven goals, from nine Premier League fixtures.
The Toffees are also bottom of their Europa League group after defeats to Atalanta and Lyon sandwiched a 2-2 home draw with Cypriot minnows Apollon Limassol.
Koeman, then, can have few complaints. The former Southampton boss, who appeared a real coup for The Toffees when he was appointed in 2016, could point to Everton’s failure to sign a replacement for Romelu Lukaku but the fact is that he has not helped himself with baffling team selections and nonsensical tactics.
The question now, however, is who will arrive in Koeman’s place. With the likes of Walter Mazzarri linked, there doesn’t appear to be an endless supply of standout candidates out there.
