Sam Allardyce has been mentioned as a possible replacement for Ronald Koeman at Goodison Park – leading to a divided response from Everton fans.
Boyhood Everton fan Joey Barton was fairly unequivocal when he was asked whether The Toffees should consider Sam Allardyce as a replacement for the under-fire Ronald Koeman.
“No, because I just don’t think it’s a step forward,” Barton told The Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast on talkSPORT (broadcast on 16th October 2017; 7:42 am).
And, for the most part, the majority of Everton fans would probably agree. Sitting 16th in the Premier League table at the moment, The Toffees are in the sort of precarious position that usually leads to nail-biting chairman calling for the ultimate managerial firefighter.
We are just eight games into the new season, however. And if Koeman cannot get an Everton side who spent £140 million in the summer playing to the fans’ demands, it appears unlikely that Allardyce would bring the thrilling football back to Goodison Park.
The veteran tactician certainly boasts plenty of strengths, however. He can organise a defence better than most and some of the football his Crystal Palace side played in the later stages of last season, particularly in the 3-0 thrashing of Arsenal, was mightily impressive.
Allardyce also has a bit of a reputation for bloodying the noses of the big boys.
Nonetheless, the former England boss appears to remains an unfashionable choice, rightly or wrongly, among dissatisfied Everton supporters.
