Sky Bet have installed Everton as 8-13 favourites to sign Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli.

The 26-year-old striker seems unlikely to stay with Liverpool due to huge competition for places up front in the Reds’ attack.

And Everton, of all clubs, are now favourites to bring him to Goodison Park in what would be one of the strangest transfers of the summer.

Manchester City's Mario Balotelli

The Italy international scored once in 20 Serie A appearances during a season-long loan with AC Milan last term, having netted one Premier League goal in his maiden campaign with the Merseyside club in the 2014-15 season.

Indeed, Balotelli – who cost £16 million two years ago – is very much a Liverpool flop, and many Everton fans cannot envisage his cross-city switch to the Toffees.

With a week left in the transfer window, Liverpool’s biggest obstacle in offloading Balotelli might be his wages and it remains to be seen whether Everton would accept his salary.

Plus, the Toffees are not in major need of a striker following Ronald Koeman’s claim that Romelu Lukaku is set to stay for at least another year.

Bringing in Balotelli would be a big investment all things considered, but is it worth it for a back-up striker? Perhaps not.
