Everton secured their first win of the new Premier League season, with Marco Silva getting one over his former club.

After making his Everton debut in less than ideal circumstances on the opening day of the new season, Jean-Philippe Gbamin would have relished the chance to make his first Toffees start at the earliest opportunity as Marco Silva included the summer signing in his lineup against Watford on Saturday.

Gbamin only moved to Goodison Park for £25 million at the start of the month (via BBC Sport), so it was little surprise that he started the curtain-raiser at Crystal Palace on the bench. Unfortunately for Silva, an injury to Andre Gomes meant that Gbamin was needed for the entirety of the second-half.

It was a mixed afternoon for the youngster, with some fans criticising his performance while others had a lot more sympathy for the Ivory Coast international as he looks to help fill the void left by Idrissa Gueye on Merseyside.

It seems fair to say that Everton fans are still yet to see the best from Gbamin, but it is clear that many of the supporters felt that there were a lot of encouraging signs on show as the Toffees beat the Hornets 1-0 on Saturday.

Whoscored.com shows that Gbamin won three of the four challenges he went in for – Bernard was the only Everton player to win more – while he also completed two dribbles.

And while some felt that there needs to be more to come from the 23-year-old, the large majority on social media appear to be delighted about Gbamin’s potential, and believe that he is already making progress – which could prove to be a frightening thought if he continues to improve over the coming weeks.
