Your team is flying in the league, as is the bloke for whom they paid £25 million who plays in your position. You’ve started two games all season. Doing the business in cup ties against lower-league opposition is your route back in. Everton’s Gerard Deulofeu, however, does not seem to have received the memo.
While the Spaniard was not the only disappointing performer as Ronald Koeman’s side slumped to a 2-0 home defeat to Championship side Norwich City on Tuesday, his display was arguably the most frustrating.
It was only eight days earlier that Deulofeu’s half-time introduction proved the catalyst for a 3-0 win at Sunderland. He should have ripped it up against the Canaries. Instead, he was upstaged by counterpart Josh Murphy, whose 74th-minute strike consigned the hosts to defeat after former Everton striker Steven Naismith had opened the scoring on his return to Goodison Park.
