England’s decision to call up Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Harry Winks has incensed some Everton supporters.

Winks was initially included in Aidy Boothroyd’s Under 21 squad, but earned the promotion after Fabian Delph pulled out – ahead of capped players Jonjo Shelvey, Jack Wilshere and James Ward-Prowse.

It is the 21 year old’s first ever senior call up and comes after only 300 minutes of football for Tottenham this season.

Everton’s Tom Davies has played more than double that, but was overlooked in favour of his England Under 21 colleague.

And some Everton fans are struggling to comprehend Gareth Southgate’s thinking – despite Winks having played three more times at senior level than Davies (43).

Winks is one of five Tottenham players called up by Southgate, with Everton pair Michael Keane and Jordan Pickford also included.

England face Slovenia and Lithuania in their final World Cup qualifying games this week.
