The Goodison Park academy prodigy now has four goals in six games for David Unsworth and his Everton U23s.

A number of Everton fans have taken to Twitter to comment on the Toffees U23s falling to a 4-1 loss against Derby and, despite the poor defeat, Ellis Simms was praised for his efforts on Friday night.

The Goodison Park side has done superbly in Under-23s football over the past few years but on Friday David Unsworth’s charges fell to their first Premier League 2 defeat of the season against a powerful Rams academy team now second in the table (Soccerway).

It began well for Everton, however, as Simms put the Toffees ahead in the 23rd minute at Pride Park, charging from just inside the opposition half and getting the better of the Rams defenders before slotting home his fourth goal in only six games this season.

The East Midlands side equalised with their first shot on target after 36 minutes when Louie Sibley fired home from the edge of the box and, not long after, the talismanic Anthony Gordon needed treatment and was substituted shortly afterwards.

Derby subsequently took control after the break as Jahmal Hector-Ingram netted a brace – one a penalty – and Joshua Shonibare added a fourth for his side to keep them a point behind table-topping Chelsea, who won 3-1 at Arsenal on the night.
