The Toffees forward has come under some criticism this season but Ferguson is optimistic he can kick on in 2019-20.

Everton coach Duncan Ferguson has issued a glowing assessment of Dominic Calvert-Lewin, saying the forward “ticks all the boxes” and expects him to build on this season’s progress when the 2019-20 campaign gets under way.

In what turned out to be not exactly the best campaign for some of the Toffees’ young Englishmen in the senior team, Calvert-Lewin succeeded in becoming a regular starter in Marco Silva’s side.

The 22-year-old made 35 appearances in the Premier League, with 19 of those being starts (Transfermarkt), and was involved in the bright run which included wins over Chelsea, Arsenal, and Manchester United, as well as the home draw with Merseyside rivals Liverpool.

However, Calvert-Lewin’s performances have not been without criticism, with some Everton fans slating him for such displays as that in the goalless draw away at Crystal Palace at the end of April.

While his tally of six league goals and eight in all competitions (Transfermarkt) in 2018-19 may not suggest a prolific marksman, the assessment of Ferguson – himself a striker during his playing days – suggests Everton have the makings of a star up front.

“Dominic has done very well and has managed to lock himself into that centre forward position as a regular starter,” Ferguson told Sky Sports News. “I think he’s got a bit of everything, he ticks all the boxes for me.

“He can run in behind, he can cover the physicality side of it, he can come short, he’s great in the air, his touch is improving. His stats to goals ratio is very very good, we think we can improve and we’re looking forward to Dominic kicking on next year.”

Calvert-Lewin has been with Everton since the summer of 2016, swapping Sheffield United’s Bramall Lane for Goodison Park, and is contracted to the Toffees until 2023 according to Transfermarkt.
