Everton defenders’ goal threat has dried up and reported target Mina could address that

Barcelona defender Yerry Mina was amongst the goals at the World Cup, which is interesting given Everton’s defence no longer carry a goal threat.

According to Goal, Everton are getting closer to securing a £21 million deal for Barcelona defender Yerry Mina, with the Blaugrana themselves closing in on Sevilla’s Clement Lenglet.

Mina made a big impression during his time in Russia, scoring three goals to end his tournament as Colombia’s top goalscorer ahead of the likes of Radamel Falcao and James Rodriguez.

The 23-year-old, who only joined Barca from Palmeiras in January of this year, has found opportunities hard to come by at the Nou Camp, with Gerard Pique and Samuel Umtiti currently the first choice pairing in defence.

It looks as though club officials are ready to sanction his sale despite such an impressive showing at the World Cup, which would be brilliant news for Everton.

For years the Toffees have boasted defenders with an eye for goal. Seamus Coleman, Leighton Baines and Phil Jagielka have all been big threats for the club in the past, but recently the goals have dried up.

Last season, Baines and Jagielka scored just twice between them, with Coleman having played only 12 games after sustaining a broken leg with Wales in March 2017.

Coleman would usually be the Toffees’ best source for goals, but it might take him some time to get back to his usual marauding self, meaning signing Mina could be the best way to re-establish that missing goal threat from defence.

Mina has proven on the world stage he is a handful from set-pieces, and at the moment Everton are struggling to score goals from all areas on the pitch. With Gylfi Sigurdsson’s quality from corners and free-kicks, Mina might be in for a lot of joy at Goodison Park.
