Everton defender Ramiro Funes Mori seemed to put his woes at club level behind him last night, by scoring his first goal for the Argentina national team.

La Albiceleste were in action against Peru last night in a World Cup qualifier and Funes Mori netted the opening goal for his country in the game.

He smashed home from close range after Peru failed to get rid of a corner and gave Argentina the lead.

In the end the result did not go their way however, as Peru fought back to claim a 2-2 draw in Lima. The equalising goal from Peru came from a penalty, which was given away by the Everton defender.

It has been a tough season at Goodison Park for the Argentine so far.

He has struggled for first-team football since the arrival of Ashley Williams, mostly being used out of position at left-back. New manager Ronald Koeman even appears to prefer the talented Mason Holgate at the heart of defence ahead of Funes Mori.

The Argentine will hope that some good form with his country can help catch the eye back at his Everton stomping ground. But whilst he might be scoring goals, his defending again let him down.

Koeman was unlikely to be impressed.
