Leicester City are said to be closing in on signing Jonny Evans, which could leave Sam Allardyce looking for new centre-back targets at Everton.

According to The Sun, Leicester City are set to sign Jonny Evans and Everton could be one of the clubs who are left frustrated, if that transfer goes through.

Everton have been long-term admirers of Evans and were preparing a summer bid, as reported by the Daily Mirror.

However, it seems that the Toffees have been beaten to the punch by Leicester.

Evans is now set to pen a contract at the King Power Stadium, and that should significantly strengthen Claude Puel’s defensive options.

Evans and Harry Maguire could form a solid partnership at Leicester, and Everton could be forced to watch on in frustration, if the deal turns out to be a success.

Evans £3 million release clause, which comes into effect when West Bromwich Albion are relegated, means he was always going to be one of the bargains of the summer and he could have been a good fit at Goodison Park.

Evans would have offered Everton security and solidity at the back in a position they have struggled in this season.

Michael Keane has shown flashes of quality, but question marks linger of him, while Phil Jagielka and Ashley Williams also have their critics.

Evans could have been Everton’s main centre-back, and losing out in the race for his signature won’t be the best way for the Toffees to start what is an important summer for them.
