Kieran Dowell could take a different route to Tom Davies towards Everton’s first-team – by starring at Nottingham Forest.

Kieran Dowell may only be 19 years of age but it feels as if he’s been waiting for a stab at first-team football for quite some time.

The Ormskirk-born midfielder, who joined Everton’s academy at the age of seven, is currently embarking on a first ever loan spell away from Goodison Park and, in his own words according to the Nottingham Post, he is loving every minute.

Since swapping Everton’s reserves for Nottingham Forest this summer, Dowell has already scored his first ever senior goal, produced an assist in a 2-1 win at pre-season promotion favourites Middlesbrough, and forced his way into Mark Warburton’s first-team plans.

After making two appearances of the bench, Dowell has started each of Forest’s last three Championship fixtures. And to top it all off, the teenager made his first appearance for England’s Under-21s last week after winning the Under-20 World Cup in the summer.

Forest’s excellent start to the new season has raised plenty of eyebrows but it’s perhaps the speed of Dowell’s adaptation that has been their biggest surprise.

Therefore, Everton’s decision to loan out one of their most talented prospects, who played a major role in their victorious Premier League B campaign last season, rather than keep him on the fringes of the first-team is already looking like an inspired decision.

After all, The Toffees are hardly short of options in the centre of the park with Gylfi Sigurdsson, Davy Klaassen arriving in the summer to complement Morgan Schneiderlin, Idrissa Gueye and Dowell’s former midfield partner in the club’s academy, Tom Davies.

However, while Davies did not go out on loan, and was instead fast-tracked into the starting XI by Ronald Koeman, Dowell could benefit immensely from honing his talents elsewhere.

Forest are already reaping the rewards and, if he continues in the same vein, Dowell will return to Goodison Park looking to follow Davies into the first-team.
