Everton have been linked with Marco Silva this season, but he could be heading to Benfica.

Marco Silva, Manager of Watford gives his team instructions during the Premier League match between Everton and Watford at Goodison Park on November 5, 2017 in Liverpool, England.

According to The Independent, Benfica have made an approach to Marco Silva to become their new manager for next season, replacing Rui Vitoria.

Benfica appointed Vitoria as Jorge Jesus’ replacement back in 2015, and he led the club to successive league titles, whilst he also boasts a 70% win rate with the Portuguese giants.

However, whilst Benfica have lost just one league game this season, Vitoria’s position isn’t secure, as rivals Porto are top of the table, and could pip Benfica to the title this term.

Benfica's coach Rui Vitoria gestures from the sideline during the Portuguese league football match between SL Benfica and CD Aves at the La Luz stadium in Lisbon on March 10, 2018.

That may lead to Vitoria losing his job, and it’s claimed that Silva – who was sacked by Watford in January – has already been approached about taking the job in such circumstances.

Everton move finally ruled out?

Silva not only caught the eye with Hull City last season, but also in the opening months of this term, having picked up some impressive results in charge of Watford, before being sacked in January.

The Portuguese boss was given his marching orders just months after being wanted by Everton in a big-money raid, as Farhad Moshiri identified him as the top choice to replace Ronald Koeman.

Watford stood firm, rejecting Everton’s bids, but then felt that the speculation over a move to Goodison Park hurt the Hornets, prompting the club to sack Silva.

With questions over Sam Allardyce’s future, some have wondered whether Moshiri will turn his attention back to Silva this summer – but Benfica’s move could now finally put Everton rumours to bed once and for all.
