Everton right-back Seamus Coleman has delivered an impassioned defence of under-fire manager Marco Silva by stressing the Premier League club cannot keep “chopping and changing”.

The Toffees ace juxtaposed the Portuguese’s situation at Goodison Park to that of Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp and Tottenham Hotspur’s Mauricio Pochettino in that it took them a while to establish their philosophy within the team and added that Everton are getting there.

Silva has found himself under scrutiny by some sections of the club fanbase in recent weeks, while pundits have also had their say, such as former Arsenal and England defender Martin Keown, who wrote in the Daily Mail in January that “if Silva does not wake up soon, he could find himself out of the job”.

Although Everton’s last game before the international break was an impressive 2-0 win over Chelsea, the 41-year-old continues to have doubters, but Coleman stressed that his manager is a “workaholic” who gives his all, and eventually things will come good providing he is not axed.

‘We can’t keep chopping and changing. No, no, no, no,” Coleman told the Daily Mail. “Managers need to implement their own style. Look at Jurgen Klopp and Mauricio Pochettino. They didn’t hit the ground running. It took them time, one or two years. Marco Silva is a workaholic and we are not far away.”

According to Transfermarkt, Silva has overseen 35 games at Everton, winning 13, drawing seven and losing 15, with 40 Premier League points accrued and a point-per-game tally of 1.29.

Up next for Everton – currently 11th in the Premier League table – is a trip to West Ham United on Saturday evening.
