Everton can redeem Klaassen mistake by landing £26m-rated Silva

Everton are reportedly interested in signing Benfica midfielder Rafa Silva.

There is no hiding the fact that Everton’s summer window was nothing short of a disaster. Ronald Koeman spent a huge amount of owner Farhad Moshiri’s money, but he was sacked just a few months later.

Michael Keane cost a huge £25million from Burnley, while Gylfi Sigurdsson’s inconsistent form is hardly the kind of performances expected of a playmaker worth a club-record fee of £45million. Cenk Tosun cost a huge £27million.

It is fair to say that Everton’s failures in the window certainly outweigh their successes. Jordan Pickford has been excellent in goal, Wayne Rooney has shown just what he is capable of while Cuco Martina’s versatility has been key.

But perhaps the biggest disappointment of all Everton’s summer transactions was the signing of Davy Klaassen. Huge things were expected of the Dutchman after captaining Ajax to a Europa League final last season.

The 25-year-old even scored 20 goals from midfield last season, so at £25million, he was considered somewhat of a bargain. A decent pre-season followed, but now Klaassen has been ostracised and failed to play in the league since September.

Now, Everton can redeem that mistake after Portuguese outlet A Bola have claimed that the Toffees are interested in signing 24-year-old Benfica midfielder Rafa Silva, for a fee believed to be in the region of £26.5million.

In what seems to be the same kind of deal; a similar fee and position from a European top-tier side, 5ft 6in Silva’s tenacity and determination in the middle of the park or out wide would see him thrive in the Premier League – something which Klaassen lacks.

The 16-time Holland international looks laboured in midfield when playing, being used out wide on occasion too. He is afraid to get stuck in, certainly not adapting to the physical rigours of English football. Silva, on the other hand, would hit the ground running.

Boasting huge pace, Silva can offer versatility from midfield or out wide, as well as the kind of aggression that is required to thrive in the Premier League football. At £26.5million, Everton would redeem their Klassen mistake by signing Silva.
