The Toffees number nine was asked about the prospect of competition with the Goodison Park summer signing for a first-team spot up front.
Everton forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin has given his thoughts on Toffees summer signing Moise Kean, describing him as a “good lad” who he gets on well with, and is looking forward to competing with him to lead the Blues line this season (official Everton website).
The 19-year-old Italian striker was signed by the Goodison Park outfit in early August from Juventus, joining for an initial fee of £25.1million that could rise to £27.5million, according to BBC Sport.
Everton’s signing of Kean has widely been praised as a major coup for the Toffees, the player “destined for greatness” according to Italy manager Roberto Mancini (iNews) and, given his quality, the assumption would be that he would be first-choice for Marco Silva.
However, Calvert-Lewin – valued at £18million by Transfermarkt – has been given the number nine shirt by Everton, a move that he views as the latest step on his transition into one the Goodison Park club’s more established players.
When asked by the Everton media team of the increased competition up front, he replied: “I’ve got to keep doing what I have been and playing my own game. Keep doing well in training and continue fitting into the system.
“There’s always going to be competition in the Premier League. I was fully expecting the club to bring in players, in my position or elsewhere. You can’t be naive and think they might not bring in anyone. Moise is a good lad, I get on really well with him and it will be good competition this season.”
Everton followed up their Premier League opening-day goalless draw at Crystal Palace with a 1-0 win over Watford at Goodison Park, and up next for Silva and co is tonight’s trip to newly promoted Aston Villa.
