Everton boss Sam Allardyce takes credit for Cenk Tosun’s good form

Cenk Tosun was held back in his initial few weeks at Everton after arriving.

Sam Allardyce has said after Everton’s match against Stoke City, that he deserves credit for Cenk Tosun’s good form.

Allarydce held Tosun back after the striker arrived from Besiktas, much to the frustration of Everton fans.

Tosun barely featured in his first few weeks for the club, with the likes of Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Oumar Niasse favoured.

However, Tosun has now bagged four goals in his last three appearances to show his quality.

Tosun scored twice during Everton’s 2-1 win over Stoke yesterday.

And Allardyce has fired back at his critics with his post-match comments.

He said: “The confidence he has gained now from us taking him out early doors [has helped], when everyone was saying ‘you’re not playing him’ – you know, the usual rubbish you get from outside the football club. But, of course, they don’t know. I do, they don’t. We wanted to get him fitter and more used to the players he was playing with. A lot of the training he did in Dubai has paid dividends not just for us but for him.”

Tosun’s goals have established him as Everton’s number one striker now, and he looks set to retain his position up-front of the remainder of the season.

Everton’s win over Stoke was just their second success on their travels over the course of the whole season, and it has taken them to 40 points.
