Everton manager Sam Allardyce comments on the penalty decision against Liverpool.

Sam Allardyce looks on from the stand during the Premier League match between Everton and West Ham United at Goodison Park on November 29, 2017 in Liverpool, England.

Everton boss Sam Allardyce has told the club’s official website he cannot understand Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren’s decision making in the Merseyside derby.

Lovren gave away a penalty against Everton in the late stages of the game, which Wayne Rooney scored to give the Toffees a 1-1 draw.

The result was reward for Everton’s defensive resilience, and a big blow to Liverpool, who had failed to kill the game off after Mohamed Salah’s stunning opener.

While Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp was furious at the penalty decision, Everton’s Allardyce turned the focus towards haphazard Reds defender Dejan Lovren.

Allardyce said: “Dominic handled the ball extremely well, then was pushed over by Lovren.

“I do not know why he put his hands on Dominic, when all he needed to do was stand up.

“The referee was outstanding, to give a decision of that magnitude in a derby at Anfield was very good from him. And it was definitely a penalty, in my view.”

Everton were big underdogs for the fixture at Anfield and a draw was a good result.

The Toffees are now unbeaten in three league games, two of which are under Allardyce, and have climbed back into 10th place.

Liverpool sit in fourth place, 16 points behind runaway leaders Manchester City.
