Carlo Ancelotti has told Everton’s official website that Andre Gomes picked up an injury against Newcastle United yesterday, but he does not expect it to be a serious one.

Gomes was withdrawn early against Newcastle, as Everton chased a route back into the match.

And Ancelotti confirmed after the game that the substitution was one which was enforced on him, rather than tactical.

“He had a little problem on his knee, but nothing special. Just a knock,” Ancelotti said.

With Gomes seemingly nursing an injury issue now, there must be question marks over whether he will keep his place in the team.

For all of Everton’s success this term, the Portuguese midfielder has not entirely convinced.

Gomes was in poor form yesterday too, as he conceded the penalty which give Newcastle the lead in the contest.

The former Barcelona man took out Callum Wilson with a sloppy challenge in the box, and his error ultimately proved very costly.

Everton have now slipped down to third place in the Premier League table, after leading the way at the start of the weekend.
