Asmir Begovic looks set to start for Everton across the coming weeks after an injury to first-choice goalkeeper Jordan Pickford emerged.
Everton are still searching for a first Premier League win this season but Saturday’s 0-0 draw against Liverpool displayed a rousing performance.
Frank Lampard’s men were unlucky not to win but did have Pickford to thank for a host of fine saves against the Reds.
Yet just days after Pickford racked up eight saves against Liverpool, the England international is now facing a spell on the sidelines.
Asmir Begovic looks set to start for Everton
The Athletic report that Pickford has now suffered a thigh injury and will be out of action for a month.
To add another blow to that situation, veteran goalkeeper Andrew Lonergan is also out with a knee problem.
That manes Asmir Begovic is left as the only senior goalkeeper for the coming weeks.
Everton have allegedly considered signing a free agent but are unlikely to do so right now.
Billy Crellin will likely have to step up as cover for Begovic, with both Joao Virginia and Harry Tyrer out on loan.
This is quite the turn of events for Begovic.
In mid-August, The Telegraph reported that Manchester United were pushing to sign Begovic as cover for David De Gea.
Lampard was ‘determined’ to keep the 35-year-old and United were scared away, instead signing Newcastle United goalkeeper Martin Dubravka.
Had Begovic made that move, he would have likely been kicking his heels on the bench for a while – much as Dubravka probably will be now!
Instead, Begovic is now set for a run as Everton’s first-choice goalkeeper as he seeks to prove his Premier League credentials once again.
It’s funny how football can turn so quickly, and Lampard will certainly be delighted to have fought hard to keep the Bosnian out of United’s clutches after suffering two injuries in the goalkeeping department.
