The Norwich City youngster has been linked with a move to Everton having previously been tipped to join Tottenham Hotspur.

According to a recent report from the Sun, Everton want to bring Norwich City’s James Maddison to Goodison Park, but the Toffees are not in the best position to entice England’s best young talent right now, potentially opening the door for Tottenham Hotspur to make a move of their own.

As claimed by the London Evening Standard, Tottenham are big fans of the 20-year-old, having tracked him closely during his days at Coventry City and, if Everton are now interested, Spurs could take advantage of the Toffees’ awful start to steal a march on their rivals.

The problem for Everton is that their current league position and the uncertainty following Ronald Koeman’s exit leaves potential targets with a big decision to make, even if they cannot move until January.

Everton have an impressive academy and a history of giving youth a chance, but that was forgotten as Koeman struggled for victories and the need for a surge up the table could ensure the next generation are waiting a little longer for their chance.

If it is a straight fight between Everton and Tottenham for Maddison’s signature, most would put money on him choosing the latter.

After all, Spurs made it into the group stages of the Champions League and the upper echelons of the Premier League while putting their faith in youth.

In contrast, Everton are fighting for their top flight future and, while their next manager should have his feet firmly under the table by the time the next transfer window opens, Goodison Park may not currently be the enticing prospect it was, even more so when you factor in the sheer amount of number 10s vying for a starting spot.
