Given what he once said about Liverpool, Abdoulaye Doucoure might feel a tinge of awkwardness about prospectively joining Everton.

According to The Daily Mail, the French midfielder has passed a medical with the Toffees and will sign a four-year deal which could be announced today.

During his unveiling, the Watford star will undoubtedly speak about how much of a pleasure it is to be on Merseyside but, actually, he once had designs on playing for Liverpool.

Doucoure was linked with a £40 million switch to Anfield a couple of years ago.

During the speculation, the 27-year-old admitted to Canal Plus that it was even his ‘dream’ to represent the Reds.

He said, via One Football: “Liverpool is a club that needs no introduction. I was impatient to play there at Anfield, I wanted to feel the atmosphere. For me it would be a dream to play in a club like this.”

Cue awkwardness.

Then again, Everton fans probably won’t care all that much.

Most of them will admit – if only to themselves – that their noisy neighbours are a bigger club and therefore it’s hard to criticise Doucoure if he once revealed his affection for Liverpool, over two years before a switch to Goodison Park was on the cards.

So long as he gives 100 percent under Carlo Ancelotti, that’ll speak volumes for what Merseyside club he’s really committed to.
