Everton played their first pre-season game of the summer on Sunday night, with winger Andros Townsend making his debut for the club.

The Toffees are over in the United States right now, and faced Colombian side Millonarios in Orlando late on Sunday night.

Rafael Benitez will have wanted to start with a win, but and he got one – but only on penalties after a 1-1 draw.

Andres Montejo struck Millonarios ahead in the first half, before winger Andros Townsend rattled a superb strike against the crossbar.

It took another debutant to bring Everton level in the second half with Demarai Gray scoring from the penalty spot after Nathan Broadhead had been brought down.

The game went all the way to penalties, with Everton coming out on top despite Anthony Gordon hitting the bar, with Asmir Begovic the hero for the Toffees.

All eyes were on debutants Begovic, Townsend and Gray, with winger Townsend seemingly making a strong first impression on fans.

The former Crystal Palace man joined Everton on a free transfer last week, reuniting with Benitez having played for him at Newcastle in 2016.

Everton fans were impressed, suggesting that he was direct and took players on, something supporters haven’t seen for a while.

Others think his threat is easy to see and predict he will ‘score some bangers’ this season, praising him as ‘better than Theo Walcott already’.
