Benfica want Andre Gomes as they look to spend some of the incoming Darwin Nunez cash from Liverpool on new signings.

Benfica look set for a summer of change as new boss Roger Schmidt prepares to take charge.

The likes of Petar Musa, Mihailo Ristic and Alexander Bah have already agreed to join but more signings are likely to come.

That’s because Benfica are set to sell striker Darwin Nunez to Liverpool in a total deal worth around £85million.

Whilst only a small portion of that will be paid to Benfica up front, it will still allow the Portuguese side to spend on new signings.

In an interesting twist, some of the cash would now end up heading to Goodison Park this summer.

Benfica want Andre Gomes

The Sunday Mirror (12/06, p76) report that Benfica want to bring Gomes back to Portugal.

It’s stated that Everton are willing to let midfielder Gomes leave Goodison Park this summer.

Frank Lampard wants to re-tool his squad and Gomes is available, prompting interest back in his homeland.

Both Benfica and Porto are interested in Gomes and the 28-year-old has ties to both clubs.

Gomes started his career with Porto, joining as a kid in 2005 before leaving in 2008.

Benfica signed Gomes from Boavista in 2011 and gave him a pathway to first-team football.

Gomes impressed so much that Valencia signed him in 2015 and just a year later, he was off to Barcelona.

Gomes has failed to live up to his billing though and Everton haven’t really seen the best of him over the last four years.

A major injury was a factor in that but Gomes just hasn’t imposed himself often enough on Premier League games.

Everton may now hope to bring in a chunk of the Nunez cash for themselves by selling Gomes, giving Lampard some room to manoeuvre in the transfer market.
