Bournemouth want £25 million for Callum Wilson, who is being tracked by West Ham United and Everton.
Wilson boasts a very respectable record in the Premier League with the Cherries and has already achieved his best tally for goals in a season this term, having scored seven times in 22 games for Eddie Howe’s men.
Nevertheless, perhaps the Hammers and the Toffees would be wise to reconsider pursuing the former Coventry City ace given Bournemouth’s asking price as there have got to be concerns about whether he will go on and justify that fee.
If Wilson is able to stay fit, signing him in the summer could prove a coup for David Moyes or Sam Allardyce as both West Ham and Everton have not exactly been scoring for fun this term – Wayne Rooney is the only player in either squad to reach double figures in the league during this campaign, while West Ham have had just two players score more than three times.
Wilson is enjoying a decent season and has threatened to be a real star in the past since helping Bournemouth secure promotion to the top flight, but his record with injuries makes spending £25 million on him seem like a significant gamble for either the Irons or Everton.
This is the first season where he has played more than 20 league games since the Cherries’ promotion due to two previous long-term injuries. And while that may be a positive sign that his injury problems are potentially behind him, it should perhaps alarm those interested just how long he did spend on the sidelines.
Spending £25 million on Wilson could prove to be a real masterstroke from either club if he manages to stay fit and build on the form that he has shown throughout this campaign. But West Ham and Everton must surely realise that it could be a roll of the dice as to whether he lives up to expectation or not.
