With the PFA awards coming up it is a good time to take a look at those players who could potentially be in the running to pick up a gong – in this case the Young Player of the Year award.
The criteria stipulates that those eligible must be aged 23 or younger, so here are three starlets who have enjoyed breakout seasons in 2016/17 having previously been relatively unknown.
Everton’s Tom Davies
A product of the Everton youth system, Davies had made just two Everton first team appearances before this campaign – but has already played 17 league games this term.
The 18-year-old is a versatile midfielder and also scored his first goal for Everton during an impressive 4-0 victory against Manchester City in January.

Another youth team product, Pickford took a little longer to break through at Sunderland, having only made three senior appearances for the club before his 22nd birthday.
The Sunderland goalkeeper earned experience during several loan spells – most recently at Preston North End – but is now the undisputed number one at the Stadium Of Light.

Mauricio Pochettino is a manager who likes to give youngsters a chance, as shown by the fact Tottenham Hotspur have the lowest average age for a starting XI in the top tier.
Tottenham’s Winks is the latest to benefit from this trust in youth, making 33 appearances in all competitions this season and many have been calling for the 21-year-old to receive his first senior England cap.
