Everton and Burnley are both expected to be busy during the transfer window this summer.
Toffees boss Ronald Koeman is believed to be interested in strengthening his forward options at Goodison Park, especially with the future of Romelu Lukaku yet to be resolved.
One of the Dutchman’s key targets is thought to be Burnley striker Andre Gray, although the Daily Star claims that Everton face stiff competition from the likes of Tottenham Hotspur in the race to sign the 25-year-old.
An interesting way for the Blues to steal a march on their rivals in the pursuit of Gray, however, would be by offering the Clarets James McCarthy in return.
Sean Dyche is said to be a keen admirer of the 26-year-old Republic of Ireland international, according to the Daily Mail, but has been put off by Everton’s asking price of £20 million.

With a swap deal involving the pair, however, a compromise can surely be reached.
Gray has all of the attributes needed to be a success at Goodison Park, under Ronald Koeman’s intense regime.
He has bundles of pace, and his ability to get in behind opposing defenders would offer the Toffees a totally different facet to their attacking play.
Whilst he would not offer the quality that Lukaku possesses, he would undoubtedly provide the attributes which the Blues currently lack, and despite the recent controversy that he was embroiled in, he is the kind of player who could burst into life under the guidance of someone like Koeman.
And should Burnley consider sanctioning Gray’s exit to Everton, the prospect of having McCarthy at Turf Moor should be enough to soften the blow of losing arguably their best player.
The Toffees midfielder’s tenacious playing style, and impressive work ethic – two prerequisites for a Dyche signing, would be invaluable to the Clarets, as they once again look to avoid the drop down to the Championship.
And with the potential benefits of a swap deal involving Gray and McCarthy, it should be one that is given real consideration by both clubs.
