David Harrington’s move from Cork City to Premier League giants Everton could come under threat with the Irish Independent reporting that he could be out for around three months following shoulder surgery.

This is not the end of the road as far as Harrington’s potential switch to Goodison Park is concerned. But it is an unwelcome pothole; news of the goalkeeper’s ill-timed injury feeling like something of a metaphorical flat tyre just as the destination was starting to become visible on the horizon.

Harrington, who also has admirers at Newcastle United, recently travelled to England for talks with Toffees boss Frank Lampard. And with a bid of around 100,000 euros agreed, Cork coach Colin Healy admitted that this may be an opportunity too good to turn down.

Will Cork City goalkeeper David Harrington seal his Everton move?

“We will wait and see what happens,” Healy explains. “He’s a young lad. He’s done very, very well for himself, he’s got a big future in the game. It can be difficult when you’re a young lad. You have got that pressure and you are linked with Everton.

“Listen they’re a massive club, they are. People don’t realise how big they are. So let’s see what happens over the next few days with it.

“If he stays with us then great. If he does go at the end of the year or something like that, we will wish him the best.”

According to the Independent, Harrington is now set for an agonising wait. Surgery is required to correct a serious shoulder injury, with the 22-year-old expected to be out of action until 2023. This most untimely blow, the report adds, ‘complicates’ Harrington’s hopes of a move across the sea.

He is yet to undergo a medical with Everton. And the Merseysiders will want to ensure he has recovered sufficiently before they commit themselves to offering Harrington a potentially long-term contract.

Harrington has played 29 games this season, keeping an impressive 14 clean sheets. Cork City are also six points clear at the top of the League of Ireland First Division table
