Why official Everton article praising Ademola Lookman could actually make things worse

The 21-year-old seems out of favour under Marco Silva and it remains to be seen what fans will make of the article on the Toffees’ website.

The mood among the Everton fanbase is not particularly high at the moment, given the team’s poor form and the increasing criticism of manager Marco Silva.

The Toffees have won just three of their last 13 Premier League games under the Portuguese, and were victims of an FA Cup giant killing at the hands of Championship side Millwall.

In terms of individual players, Ademola Lookman’s fall to the fringes of the Everton team hasn’t gone down too well among some fans either.

The highly rated 21-year-old played against Southampton and Millwall, but then featured for just 30 minutes against Wolverhampton Wanderers, and was then completely left out of the squad against Manchester City, with Silva telling the Liverpool Echo it was a “technical decision”.

Despite needing a goal last Saturday at Watford, Lookman was an unused substitute, with Silva preferring to use Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Bernard and even Theo Walcott in search of a goal.

On Friday, the Everton website published an interview with the forward in which Silva’s “faith in his ability has provided him with the confidence to express himself on the pitch”.

The article states that Lookman has made 17 appearances this season, “with his electric pace, close control and composure in possession regularly impressing” – which sounds all well and good until you realise he’s only made three Premier League starts all term (Transfermarkt).

In terms of Lookman’s quotes, he says: “It is always important to feel you have the manager’s trust… once you go out there it enables you to play free,” before speaking about his general attitude towards football – there doesn’t seem to be any content explicitly singing Silva’s praises.

One can’t help but feel that the tone of the article seeks to convey the image of the club having faith in Lookman and vice-versa, even though the player has had little game time recently, and with no apparent mention of how Lookman feels about Silva or the club, or indeed whether he plans to stay at Goodison Park, it may only serve to concern Toffees fans further.
