Everton striker says he wants to remain on penalty duty.
Everton striker Wayne Rooney scored one penalty last night and missed another in the team’s 3-1 win over Swansea City.
Rooney made clear after the game he does not wish to give up penalty duty.
He told the Daily Post: “I’m a confident person and I believe in myself. I was never going to give that second penalty up.”
Rooney had a strong penalty record for England, which boosted his bid to become the country’s all-time leading scorer.
But for Manchester United his record was just as mixed as his night for Everton yesterday.
Rooney has missed 10 of his last 33 penalties, a poor record at the top level.
He can handle pressure, as he demonstrated by scoring in the derby against Liverpool, but Everton saw last night that he comes with a risk when it comes to spot-kicks.
Rooney clearly wants to remain on penalty duty, but Everton boss Sam Allardyce should consider overruling his star man and hand them away.
When Leighton Baines returns to fitness, he should resume his role as first choice penalty taker, and take the burden away from Rooney.
