It was a surprise to see Jonjoe Kenny go out on loan to Schalke last summer. The young defender struggled for chances at Goodison Park and 12 months down the line, it certainly feels like it was the right move for him.

Kenny started 34 games in all competitions for the Royal Blues, scoring twice and assisting three goals in the process.

With the Bundesliga season coming to an end, Kenny’s loan stay came to a finish as well and the Everton man paid a heartfelt tribute to the club and their fans with a tiny little hint about a possible return at the end.

The Englishman will now return to Everton but his future is still unclear. The Toffees have an ageing Seamus Coleman who will need a successor to his throne soon.

Djibril Sidibe is currently on loan until the end of the season. L’Equipe claimed a couple of weeks ago that Everton were considering the possibility of seeking another season-long loan deal for the Frenchman.

That made very little sense considering that Kenny, with a ton of experience under his belt, was returning before the start of next season.

Another loan deal for Sidibe could potentially mean that Kenny is no longer in Everton’s plans for the future. That would be a shame considering how well he played for Schalke in the Bundesliga this season.

Kenny ended his post saying: “Hopefully we’ll see each other again.” That could well be a lot sooner than he would have thought if Everton prefer Sidibe over him next season.
