Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly set to challenge Everton for the Barcelona-owned ace.
Everton’s on-loan ace Andre Gomes spoke exclusively to Sky Sports about his struggles during his time with Barcelona, and his comments should concern Tottenham, who are reportedly interested in signing him.
According to a report from the Sun, Spurs are hoping to beat the Toffees to the 25-year-old’s signature, with Mauricio Pochettino thought to be keen on bolstering his midfield ranks.
Gomes has been in fine form since moving to the Premier League in the summer, in what has been a stark contrast from his time in Spain.
The Portuguese really struggled following his big money move to Barca from Valencia in the summer of 2016.
Gomes spoke exclusively to Sky Sports, and admitted that the pressure of playing for Barcelona was sometimes too much:
“I wasn’t unhappy in Barcelona, but I was feeling the struggle. Sometimes, I’m more negative than positive about myself. I’d be the first person to shout at myself, close the door and scream to myself that I didn’t play good. It’s difficult because [Barcelona] is a massive club, and you have to be prepared. Somehow, perhaps I wasn’t prepared for that side. I was just preparing to play football, go to the stadium and play, so maybe I wasn’t prepared for that situation.”
Whilst Tottenham are clearly nowhere near the size of Barca, they are still a big club, and are expected to win major honours.
There will be a lot of pressure to succeed if Gomes does join Spurs, but Pochettino and Daniel Levy will surely be wary of bringing him to north London, following his comments yesterday.
If Poch is to bring in any new signings to Tottenham over the next two transfer windows, they absolutely must be an upgrade on what he already has at his disposal, and it is extremely doubtful that Gomes meets that criteria.
