According to the Liverpool Echo, Carlo Ancelotti will leave discussions over the future of Jonjoe Kenny at Everton until the end of the season.
Kenny spent the season on loan at Schalke, as one of an ever-growing number of English players looking to the Bundesliga as a means of getting gametime and furthering their development.
The 23-year-old made 31 league appearances, scoring twice, including a fizzing strike against Union Berlin post-lockdown.
With Seamus Coleman much improved this season and Djibril Sidibe in the picture on loan, Kenny’s path to the first team remains unclear.
That said, he needs only to look at the experiences of Mason Holgate to see how quickly the landscape can change at Everton.
The club did not land an expensive central defender last summer and Holgate took his opportunity expertly to become a fixture in the first team.
Kenny may hope that Sidibe’s loan is not extended for another year, although he did post on Instagram that he hopes he and Schalke will ‘see each other again’, so another year in Germany cannot be ruled out.
But he has shown in the Bundesliga that he can handle the rigours of a full top flight season and needs look no further than Holgate for inspiration on how to grab his chance – if he gets one next season.
