Ian Wright praised Dominic Calvert-Lewin for ‘doing really well’ despite Everton’s 3-0 defeat to Manchester City at Goodison Park on Sunday afternoon.
For at least half an hour, Everton were well in the game against treble-chasing Manchester City, only for İlkay Gündoğan’s cleverly-worked and improvised finish opening the scoring after 37 minutes, before Erling Haaland got his customary goal a few minutes later.
Before all of that, the Toffees weren’t just defending well, but they were also making the ball talk and Ian Wright felt that Dominic Calvert-Lewin was running Man City ‘all over the place’.
But, at half-time, he was subbed by Sean Dyche, with struggling summer signing Neal Maupay coming onto the field.
In the end, Gündoğan would score a brilliant free-kick after the break and the game would peter out to a comfortable 3-0 win for the current champions of England.
As for Everton, their fight to avoid relegation to the Championship goes on, with Wright impressed by what he saw from their star striker, despite that defeat, as he told Premier League Productions (14/05/23 at 3:00 pm).
“I was optimistic with Dominic Calvert-Lewin, if I am honest,” said Wright after seeing DCL being subbed for Maupay. “I thought he was doing really well. I felt he was running Man City all over the place.”
EVERTON HAVE TO MOVE ON…
There is no time for Everton to dwell, they have to move on and put the points on the board for the next game and hope that Calvert-Lewin isn’t injured.
That would be the worry for the fans because surely Dyche wouldn’t have taken him off for tactical reasons.
As it stands, it seems as though this relegation fight will go to the last day of the season, unless those from Merseyside win their next match and everything else goes in their favour.
