Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa has suggested to Leeds Live that he wants to train Raphinha up to play in central attacking midfield.

Leeds have brought in the Brazilian from Rennes this summer, and it appears that his versatility was a key reason why Bielsa was attracted to him.

Most Raphinha’s experience throughout his career so far has come off the wing.

But Bielsa has suggested that he believes that the 23-year-old could be developed into a central playmaker in the coming years.

“He’s an additional alternative to the right-wing position, left-wing position and eventually to the central, offensive midfield position,” he said.

“Fundamentally, he’s a winger who can play on the right or left-hand side.”

Raphinha’s arrival at Leeds has caused great excitement around Elland Road, as he was one of the most dangerous players in Ligue 1 last season.

The rapid wide man caused defences no end of problems, as he claimed goals and assists aplenty.

Rennes actually ended up qualifying for the Champions League last season, with Raphinha’s dynamism a key reason behind their success.

Raphinha’s first task at Leeds will just be breaking into their team, though.

Bielsa tends to take his time with new signings before exposing them to regular football.

And it could be that Raphinha is used as a substitute rather than a starter for his first few weeks with the Yorkshire club.
