Jamie Carragher has stated that he is unsure about the rumoured 18-month contract Tottenham are going to hand Antonio Conte, as he told Sky Sports News (01/11/21 at 5:05 pm).

After sacking Nuno Espirito Santo on Monday, Spurs have seemingly been quick to bring in a replacement.

Even though talks between Conte and Spurs broke down in the summer, it seems as though he is going to be given what he wants at the second time of asking.

Sky Sports report that Conte is expected to be named Tottenham boss on Tuesday and Daniel Levy is handing him an 18-month deal.

But given Tottenham’s current situation, Carragher feels that he going to need more than that to turn their ship around.

“I think a manager is going to need more than 18 months to turn Tottenham around,” said Carragher. “Even though I am a huge admirer of Antonio Conte and how quickly he had the success with Chelsea.

“I think it will be very difficult to replicate that success in 18 months. I think he could need another 18 months, after that to get Tottenham back to challenge.

“When I say challenge, I say where they were under Pochettino, where they felt that they had a chance of winning trophies and pushing people for the title. And Champions League, year in and year out.

“Do I think Conte can turn that around in 18 months? I think it will be difficult even for a manager of his calibre.”

There is some serious talent at Spurs that hasn’t just underperformed under the recently-sacked Nuno, but under Jose Mourinho and even towards the back end of Mauricio Pochettino’s reign.

Even though Harry Kane has been outstanding during the previous two managers, he has well and truly fallen off a cliff this time around.

Some would point towards the England captain himself and all the well-documented rumours about his future in the summer.

But players like Dele Alli, Tanguy Ndombele, Steven Bergwijn and Matt Doherty need picking up.

And that’s where Conte’s highly-demanding style will come into play, if this doesn’t work, then nothing will.
