Writing in his column for Sportskeeda, Paul Merson has been discussing Darwin Nunez’s cameo against Manchester City at the weekend.
The Uruguayan came off the bench against Pep Guardiola’s side at Anfield on Sunday, and while he wasn’t effective, it’s fair to say he made an impact.
Indeed, Nunez got in behind on multiple occasions, but he consistently made the wrong decisions, failing to spot some obvious passes, instead opting to shoot from distance.
Merson wasn’t best pleased with what he saw from Nunez, stating that it was worrying that the striker couldn’t spot the passes that he should have played.

Concerning signs
Merson gave his verdict on Nunez.
“When Darwin Nunez came on, the worrying thing was that he didn’t pass the ball to Salah. It’s even more worrying that he didn’t even spot Salah’s run. They might play Carvalho or Harvey Elliott further up the pitch this week. With West Ham’s injuries at the back, this might be a good time to help Nunez with his game. With him on the pitch, however, you won’t get the best out of Salah,” Merson wrote.
Desperate to impress
The problem with Nunez at the moment seems to be that he’s trying too hard.
Everytime the South American got on the ball he was looking to get a shot away and score a goal, and while you do want your striker to be positive, he also has to be smart.
Shooting often isn’t the best course of action in the final third, and if Nunez had just got his head up a bit more, the Reds could’ve scored two or three against City.
Hopefully, as the striker spends more time with Jurgen Klopp and his coaching staff, Nunez will learn that side of the game, and when he does, he will be a very dangerous striker indeed.
