Will Manchester United have any defenders fit for the game with Arsenal
It is a becoming a season to forget for Manchester United fans this campaign – and today was yet another day to add to the many miserable days this season.
Stoke City have defeated Manchester United at the Britannia by two goals to one thanks to a sterling performance from former Liverpool player Charlie Adam.
But while the defeat – which now leaves them in seventh place, six points behind Liverpool, who have a game in hand in fourth – was a bad thing, but that is not where their misery ended.
Because the club were already struggling with defensive options – a struggle that has become much more potent today.
Jonny Evans left the field of play with a calf injury after just 10 minutes – but the injury to fellow central defensive cover option Phil Jones seemed much more serious.
He went into an aerial challenge with Jonathan Walters toward the end of the first half and came off worse – being stretchered off with a serious looking head injury.
With Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand also suffering with fitness concerns this presents a serious worry for United – who did not bring in any defenders during the January Transfer Window.
It is certainly not what they need with just 11 days to come before a massive game with Arsenal.
So far there is no definitive say on just how long the two players might be out of action but in the case of Jones it certainly looked a serious problem and the hope from all involved is that he recovers as soon as possible.
For United it is the last thing they need. It has been a poor season and the defeat at the Britannia was just another sore point for the manager.
They must now hope Michael Carrick isn’t lining up in the back four against Arsenal on the 12th.
