There were plenty of goals around Europe as league leaders Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Juventus all won, with PSG going top of Ligue 1.

Spain: A remarkable match at Deportivo La Coruna saw Lionel Messi become the first player in Barcelona’s history to score 15 hat tricks in La Liga as Barcelona claimed a 5-4 win. That, unbelievably, was also Messi’s 9th hat trick this calendar year. The other highlight of the match was undoubtedly Jordi Alba’s volleyed lob own goal. Real Madrid won 2-0 at home to Celta to go fourth in La Liga and Athletico’s talismanic striker Falcao secured his club all three points with a 90th minute winner at Real Sociedad. Atheltico Madrid stay level on points with Barcelona at the top of the league.

Italy: The big match of the weekend saw Juventus beat Napoli 2-0 in Turin to go out on their own at the top of the league. Juve are now the only unbeaten team in Italy. Napoli will have to start looking over their shoulder as Inter and Lazio both won to close up to one point behind Cavani and company. Inter beat Catania 2-0 whilst Lazio fended off an AC Milan comeback to win 3-2 in Rome. The top four are 4 points ahead of Roma, who came from being 2-0 down after fifteen minutes to beat Genoa 4-2.

Germany: Bayern continue to steamroller everyone in their path as they beat Fortuna Dusseldorf 5-0 away from home. Their record is now eight games, eight wins, twenty-six goals scored and only two conceded. Conversely Dortmund continue to struggle in the league, the champions were beaten 2-1 at home by Schalke who are now five points ahead of them in third place. Frankfurt stay in second place after bouncing back from last week’s defeat with a 3-1 win over Hannover. Wolfsburg dropped to the bottom of the table on goal difference by losing 2-0 at home to Freiburg.

France: PSG’s 1-0 win at home to Reims on Saturday was enough to see them take first place in the league on goal difference as Marseilles lost 1-0 at Troyes. Both clubs have 19 points, with Lyon one behind after they beat Brest 1-0 at home. Marseilles host Lyon next weekend in a match where the main winners could well be PSG. Now the Parisian club are top of the league, it’s hard to see them being shifted from the perch.
