Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka re-united with Aaron Ramsey on Saturday as Switzerland and Wales recorded a 1-1 draw at Euro 2020.
Both players started for their country yesterday, with Xhaka, who could be heading for Arsenal’s exit door this summer, producing a strong display for his side.
Switzerland took the lead minutes after the restart through Breel Embolo and looked like they were heading for a deserved three points.
But Wales hit back when Kieffer Moore headed home with 15 minutes left on the clock, as the ex-Arsenal teammates, Ramsey and Xhaka continued to battle in the middle of the park.
Just before stoppage-time, Xhaka won possession in Wales’ defensive third and his forward pass eventually resulted in the Swiss re-taking the lead.
But replays showed that the goal was offside and both teams walked away with a point in their Euro 2020 opener.
Arsenal’s official Twitter account posted a message about Xhaka and Ramsey after the game.
As several Arsenal supporters also reacted to them embracing after the full-time whistle.
Either way, it will be interesting to see where both players are at once this tournament is over because there is speculation about their future.
Roma Press have claimed that Xhaka will be donning the colours of the Serie A giants next season and will leave Arsenal this summer.
It’s been five years since Arsenal paid £30 million for Xhaka services (Sky Sports), but it’s fair to say that he has been a marmite-like figure during his time in North London.
Ramsey, on the other hand, has been more popular than his midfield counterpart, with reports in Italy suggesting that Edu is trying to bring him back to the club.
It does seem as though Xhaka has played his last game for Arsenal, but it would be a surprise to see Ramsey donning the colours of the Gunners once more.
