Eunan O’Kane has told The Yorkshire Evening Post that he and Leeds United team-mate Kalvin Phillips need to improve with the ball.

The duo started in midfield last Saturday as Leeds edged out Brentford to win 1-0 and secure Paul Heckingbottom’s first win as the Whites’ head coach.

But O’Kane, speaking to The Yorkshire Evening Post, has suggested that the victory has glossed over his and Phillips’ inadeqaucies on the day.

Phillips lost the ball a total of 15 times for Leeds, completing 24 of his attempted 37 passes and being dispossessed on two occasions, while the Northern Irishman managed to only complete 16 of 26 passes.

And the 27-year-old, who joined Leeds under Garry Monk in 2016, believes that he and his fellow midfielder need to be a lot better in possession from here on in.

“From a personal point of view, and I’d imagine Kalvin would say the same thing, we can be better with the ball,” said the Republic of Ireland international.

“When we watch it back we won’t be too pleased with that. “But sometimes you have to dig in and roll your sleeves up. Sometimes you have to grind out a win.”

O’Kane, in particular, has been typically annoying for Leeds fans in recent weeks. His form has plummeted and he needs to improve – and fast.

Adam Forshaw, unavailable for the win over Brentford after his partner gave birth, might be back when Heckingbottom’s side visit Middlesbrough on Friday, and few would be surprised to see him start over O’Kane.
