Eunan O’Kane admits frustration under Garry Monk

Eunan O’Kane joined Leeds United from Bournemouth in the summer of 2016.

Leeds United midfielder Eunan O’Kane has been quoted as saying by The Irish Times that he could not have done more to play regularly last season than he did.

O’Kane joined Championship club Leeds from Premier League side Bournemouth in the summer of 2016.

As reported by The Daily Mail, the 27-year-old midfielder was the Whites’ 11th signing of the summer of 2016.

The Republic of Ireland international midfielder was able to make only 20 starts in the Championship last season and came on as a substitute on four different occasions in the league.

The former Bournemouth midfielder has admitted that he could not have done more than he could last season to play regularly under then head coach Garry Monk, who is now in charge of Championship rivals Middlesbrough.

O’Kane was an unused substitute in each of their final six Championship matches for last season from which Leeds could pick up only from four points.

“It was hugely frustrating for me because I had been in that situation before in terms of teams trying to get promoted and I do think my experience could have benefited everyone,” The Irish Times quotes O’Kane as saying. “It’s done now, it’s a new season but there are maybe a lot of little ‘ifs . . .’ although it’s too late now.

“It’s not my place to pick the team but if you do go back to last season and look at the record of when I was in the team, I don’t think I could have done an awful lot more than what I did do.

“But I wasn’t being selected. It’s like I say, though, I didn’t get to pick the team; all I could do was make myself available.”

O’Kane has started each of Leeds’s eight Championship matches so far this season, providing three assists in the process.
