Chelsea defender Ethan Ampadu was linked with a move to Aston Villa this summer, but he ended up making a loan switch to German side RB Leipzig.

Football has a funny way of finding a way, and football may have just found its way with Aston Villa and Chelsea’s highly-rated defender Ethan Ampadu.

Throughout the summer, Villa have been signing players, left, right and centre. Nine in total so far. Therefore, a player like Ampadu, given his qualities and background, would have at some point been touted for a move to Villa Park.

Well, that was the case in June when Villa were trying to add more quality to their backline as Dean Smith was seemingly keen on the 18-year-old, according to the Guardian.

In the end, a move didn’t materialise, as Villa signed the likes of Bjorn Engels and Tyrone Mings. But since then, Empadu has made a switch out of Chelsea as he has joined German side RB Leipzig on a season-long loan [BBC Sport].

There’s no doubt that if Ampadu had signed for Villa then the supporters would have welcomed the versatile defender with open arms.

Nonetheless, despite moving to Germany, Villa fans may still get a glimpse of their once reported target because Smith’s side will take on RB Leipzig on August 3 in what will be their final pre-season game of the summer.

One month ago, had it been pointed out that Ampadu would be sharing the same field as Villa on August 3 in a pre-season friendly then many would have backed him wearing the Claret & Blue shirt, but instead, he will be competing against the team he could have signed for.

Albeit a pre-season friendly, the clash against the Bundesliga outfit will be a huge test for Villa and if Ampadu does play and perform then there’s no doubt that he’ll be talked about.
